Richard Kolodner Elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Richard D. Kolodner, LICR Executive Director of Laboratory Science and Technology and a Member of the LICR San Diego Branch, was today elected a Fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Each year, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, one of the oldest and most prestigious honorary societies in the United States, honors leaders in scholarship, business, the arts and public affairs.

Dr. Kolodner is recognized in the scientific community for his pioneering discoveries of the process of DNA mismatch repair, the mechanism used by cells to repair genetic errors that could otherwise lead to disruption of genome integrity, and its connection to hereditary cancers in humans. His defining discoveries elucidated the molecular basis for the development of certain cancers.

Dr. Kolodner is amongst 190 new Fellows and 22 Foreign Honorary Members elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences’ class of 2008. This distinguished group includes business leaders, Nobel laureates and Pulitzer Prize winners, Academy and Grammy awardees, and Kennedy Center Honorees. Fellows and Honorees of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences work together to conduct policy research relating to emerging social and intellectual issues.
