Dr. Jeanne Tie Wins Bradley Stuart Beller Merit Award

LICR investigator is first Australian to take the Award from top US oncology conference

(Melbourne and New York, May 31st, 2009) — Jeanne Tie, MD, from the Melbourne Branch of the international Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research was presented with The Bradley Stuart Beller Merit Award at an awards ceremony held at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting in Florida.

Dr. Tie’s award-winning research used gene analysis and a large clinical database and tissue bank to identify patients harboring the BRAFV600E mutation to assist in the selection of patients suitable for a new colorectal cancer (CRC) drug.

Dr. Tie is the first Australian to win the Award, which recognizes the research fellow who submits the overall highest-ranked research summary selected for presentation at the ASCO Annual Meeting, the most prestigious meeting in the field of clinical oncology.

Dr. Tie is a member of the Ludwig Colon Cancer Initiative (LCCI), an international effort organized by LICR to reduce the impact of one of the world’s most common cancers. Under the auspices of the LCCI, high quality clinical data and specimens are collected from people undergoing CRC treatment. LCCI scientists and clinicians are using these data and specimens to discover new therapy targets and strategies, including the identification of biological variations, or “biomarkers,” that will one day allow for individualized risk assessments and treatment plans.

The Bradley Stuart Beller Merit Award was created by Dr. and Mrs. Ronald Beller — in collaboration with The ASCO Foundation Board of Directors — in May 2006 in memory of the Beller’s son, Bradley Stuart Beller.
