The Office of Communications

Joshua Carr, Sarah White & Eric Sabo

WHO WE ARE:

External Communications:
Eric Sabo is an award-winning reporter who has written for a number of publications, including New York Newsday, Men’s Health, and the Washington Post. Before joining the Institute, he was the features editor at CBS HealthWatch, a leading health web site. Although Eric has no formal medical background, he essentially received his equivalency degree by writing medical books for Johns Hopkins University. He has also been a bike messenger, a commercial fisherman, and a waiter for two weeks. Eric’s main duties at LICR involve press relations and communicating Ludwig research to the public.

Internal Communications:
Sarah White obtained her PhD (studying paediatric mitochondrial disorders) at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (University of Melbourne). She then completed a post-doctoral term at the LICR (London-UCL Branch), before deciding to swap her pipette for her pen. Unfortunately, Sarah hasn’t had any experience in commercial fishing, but she did work in a bar during university (for more than two weeks) – apart from that…she’s been a scientist. Sarah’s main duties at the LICR largely involve internal communications (i.e. telling you what’s happening in the LICR - from research in individual Branches, to Institute-wide Programs and initiatives), and translating “science-ese” for the rest of the Communications team.

Electronic Communications:
Joshua Carr began working in graphic and web design with the Margery Somers Foster Center as part of the Women in Leadership Database and the Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series. After completing his undergraduate degree in Media Arts at Rutgers University, he worked for their library before making the jump to New York City and the LICR. Josh’s main duties at LICR are website maintenance, design of handouts, figures & illustrations and compilation of published papers into book & CD form. Not exactly witty, but he swears it’s all true.

WHAT WE DO:

We write: articles for the website (PS being revamped soon!); press releases on newsworthy findings (see article in this edition of NewsLink); and more!

We produce: the Scientific Annual Report (from this year); LICR promotional pieces for scientists, regulatory bodies, academic and commercial partners (existing and potential), medical doctors, and the general public; design templates for Branch web sites, Power Point presentations, and Branch-specific printed materials.
We give: advice on how and when to communicate with different groups; information on LICR Branches, groups, Affiliates, and their research.

The following have been sent to each Branch. If you need any of these, please contact us at communications@licr.org:

· A new 24-page brochure on the Institute
· The 2002 Annual report
· LICR Folders that can be used for press kits and other informational purposes.
