The Office of Clinical Trials Management

The Office of Clinical Trials Management (OCTM), headed by Dr. Eric W. Hoffman, is the integrating force behind the LICR Clinical Trials Program, centrally coordinating the LICR’s clinical trials and the production of study reagents, and managing the logistical, legal and regulatory aspects of the convergence of laboratory and clinical research in the Institute. The Clinical Trials Model

The LICR model of clinical discovery reflects the Institute’s view that the earliest clinical trials must be primarily focused on discovery, not product development, so that the potential of the therapy is fully explored. A systematic academic research approach is used to develop rational therapeutic strategies in the only setting that really counts - cancer patients. Read more here.

Cancer Vaccine Program

The cutting edge of cancer vaccine research, a good proportion of which is originating in laboratories involved in the Cancer Vaccine Program, was presented at the latest of the International Cancer Vaccine Symposia held in New York. The following overviews of the presentations given by LICR investigators summarize the current preclinical and clinical research in the Institute’s Cancer Vaccine Program. Read more here.

The James R. Kerr Program in China

In the mid 1990s, upon Dr. Old’s recommendation, the LICR Board of Directors established the James R. Kerr Program to expand LICR activities into countries such as Russia and China that are scientifically talented but have had limited opportunities for international collaboration in areas of cancer research. The Program has steadily grown and matured under Dr. Old’s stewardship, to the point where it was appropriate for a Director to be appointed in September 2002. A first interactive visit of this new phase of the Program was undertaken between October 18th and 24th, 2003, to one of the principle areas of interest of the Program, China. Read more here.

LICR News

Congratulations to LICR Affiliate Dr. Elke Jäger, the Principal Investigator at the Frankfurt Clinical Trials Center (Germany), who has just been named as the Director of a new Interdisciplinary Cancer Center to be constructed at Krankenhaus Nordwest.
LICR in the news: The Japan Times featured a story on the commencement of LICR early-phase clinical trials at Okayama University. Principal Investigator Dr. Eichi Nakayama is investigating a vaccine for prostate cancer patients.
Funding opportunity - call for European scientists. Swiss Bridge is a private foundation associated with the Swiss Cancer League and the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) (of which LICR is a member), and supports high quality cancer research in Europe (http://www.swissbridge.ch). Eligible for funding are projects dealing with basic cancer research, genetics, epidemiology, psycho-social and prevention research. Novel approaches to cancer therapy may also be supported but clinical trials are outside the scope of Swiss Bridge.
UICC International Cancer Technology Transfer Fellowships (ICRETT) 120 awards per year @average US$ 3,000 (http://fellows.uicc.org/)
Wanted – writers for the new LICR website currently being developed. Apart from looking stunning (even if we do say so ourselves), the website will provide a more dynamic and detailed account of LICR’s research programs. There will also be a particular focus on the many seminal contributions of LICR investigators (from Branches, and Affiliate and Clinical Trials Centers) to their respective fields.
