New LICR Administration Structure

In the course of determining the succession of Dr. Lloyd J. Old, Director and Chief Executive Officer, the senior Administration and Board of the LICR came to recognize that changes to LICR’s administrative structure would facilitate the future management of the global and multi-faceted activities required to achieve our mission (Box 1). Accordingly, the Board of Directors, at its June and October meetings, took the following actions:

1) Senior Executive Officer

The Board of Directors has placed the Institute’s senior executive authority in the Office of the President, Mr. Edward A. McDermott Jr.

Dr. Old remains as Director, the senior scientific officer, and will also hold the new post of Vice-Chairperson of the Board.

2) Associate Institute Directors

The Board established four Associate Directorships, corresponding to major functional areas of responsibility, in the Office of the Director. The Associate Directors will work closely with the Director and the President to advise and assist with the operations of the Institute.

The following individuals were appointed to the Associate Directorships as follows:

Associate Director - Laboratory: Richard D. Kolodner, Ph.D.
Associate Director - Clinical: George D. Demetri, M.D.
Associate Director - Programs: Andrew J.G. Simpson, Ph.D.
Associate Director - Intellectual Property & Licensing: Jonathan C.A. Skipper, Ph.D.

Dr. A. Munro Neville, the sole Associate Director of LICR for nine years and the Director of the Office of Intellectual Property for 13 years, has decided to step down from these positions. Dr. Skipper was ratified as Dr. Neville’s successor at the October Board Meeting. Dr. Neville remains a highly-valued member of the LICR Scientific Directorate, and will continue to, amongst other things, contribute to LICR policy direction, coordinate and manage crucial licensing negotiations, and direct the Institute’s Angiogenesis Program.

3) Administrative Offices

a) A decision was made to merge the Office of Technology Licensing with the Office of Intellectual Property at the end of 2004, both of which will then come under the remit of Dr. Skipper.

b) Dr. Sarah White was appointed as Director of the Office of Communications.
