At a ceremony in New York on Saturday November 6th, LICR Director Dr. Lloyd J. Old, was awarded the Johns Hopkins University President’s Medal. The President's Medal is an honor extended by the university to individuals who have achieved unusual distinction, and has been awarded to heads of state, members of Congress, a Supreme Court Justice, diplomats, literary figures, academics and other noteworthy individuals. In 2003, it was awarded to the USA’s Secretary of State, Colin Powell. First bestowed in 1978, the medal is awarded at the discretion of the President of the University.
According to William R. Brody, President of Johns Hopkins University, the medal was awarded to recognize Dr. Old’s research achievements and also his ‘national leadership’. To announce the award, Dr. Brody made the following tribute. “You have had an extraordinary career not only as a prolific and pioneering biomedical research scientist but also as a visionary leader in your role as Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and as a member of numerous distinguished national boards. My colleagues at Johns Hopkins are grateful for every opportunity they have had to work with you and have gained much from your insights, ideas and wisdom.”
