Scientific Directorate and Successions Finalized
Staff should note that the LICR Board of Directors has approved the following changes to the management of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, effective January 1st, 2006.
- Mr. R. Palmer Baker will step down as Chairman of the LICR Board after 11 years in that position.
- Dr. Lloyd J. Old will step down as LICR Director and assume the responsibilities of Chairman of the LICR Board.
- The Executive Officers (note new titles) of LICR are:
- Edward A. McDermott Jr. — President and Senior Executive Officer - oversees the management of the endowment and of the Institute.
- Richard D. Kolodner Ph.D. — Executive Director for Laboratory Science and Technology - is responsible for guiding and monitoring LICR’s laboratory research in conjunction with the independent Scientific Committee. Dr. Kolodner, assisted by the Office of Academic Review, is also involved in the process of staff appointments and promotions.
- Andrew J.G. Simpson Ph.D. — Executive Director for Programs and Operations - is responsible for initiating and facilitating programmatic research and the integration of laboratory and clinical research in the Clinical Discovery process. Dr. Simpson is also involved in the management of LICR’s public relations in conjunction with the Office of Communications.
- Jonathan C.A. Skipper Ph.D. — Executive Director for Intellectual Property and Licensing is responsible for the strategic construction and management of LICR’s intellectual property portfolio and the licensing of patents therein.
- George D. Demetri M.D. — Executive Director for Clinical and Translational Research is responsible for guiding and monitoring LICR’s clinical research. Dr. Demetri is also involved in the management of clinical trials in conjunction with the Office of Clinical Trials Management.
- Richard D.J. Walker — Chief Financial Officer is responsible for the financial management and accounting systems of the Institute, including treasury, budget planning, taxation and corporate compliance activities.
- The ‘Scientific Directorate’ will be composed of the four Executive Directors, who will jointly identify new opportunities and initiatives and develop scientific strategy, priorities and the allocation of resources. Each Executive Director will manage the individual implementation of specific activities within the sphere of his activities (see Table).
